Kremlin closed Minkavaz. Is Russia changing its regional strategy?

The Russian president Vladimir Putin abolished the Ministry of North Caucasus Affairs established in 2014 to support the regional development. The functions of the ministry will be transferred to the Ministry of Economic Development. The abolition of this ministry might be considered part of the political-institutional reshuffle which Putin started in the Russian Federation. This decision might be interpreted as the Kremlin’s will to be less involved in the North Caucasian dynamics.

The Libyan crisis directly interests Italy which in the last days tried to manage the escalation inviting in Rome Khalifa Haftar and Fayez al-Serraj without any success. In fact, the Italian attempt to conduct its personal diplomacy resulted in a disaster when al-Serraj refused to come to Rome as a sign of protest against the Italian government that since 2014 have supported Tripoli government and now with a late desperate move wants to protect its interests in North Africa creating a network of contact with the different Libyan local key actors as Haftar….

Il Caucaso del Nord continua a dare segnali contrastanti per quel che riguarda la sicurezza interna dimostrando sempre di più quanto la gestione di questa regione del sud della Russia sia complessa e debba prendere in esame tutta una serie di peculiarità locali e di influenze esterne. Mentre il fenomeno degli attacchi violenti legati alla militanza locale e al terrorismo è in diminuzione, rimane allarmante l’impatto che la propaganda jihadista in lingua russa ha nella regione in un periodo storico che vede un possibile ritorno dei foreign fighters nord caucasici nella loro terra di origine a seguito della caduta dello Stato Islamico a Raqqa (Siria) e Mosul (Iraq)….

Islam is the nation’s second most widely professed religion in the Russian Federation. According to official data and the nationwide survey, the number of Muslims in Russia is approximately 20 million people. In the capital Moscow there are four mosques while in the entire country the number of mosques is around 8 thousand. The Russian president Vladimir Putin stated that Russia is a Muslim country which sits as an Observer State in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and traditional Islam is an essential part of the country’s spiritual life….

A new European Union strategy for Central Asia

The European Union is developing a new approach toward Central Asia with the purpose of being better engaged in regional economic and political dynamics. Brussels elaborated this new strategy although EU is facing serious internal problems (Brexit, the coming EU Parliamentary elections, Euroscepticism, migration crisis, economic stagnation, confrontation with Russia and the United States on specific issues, internal division) and its presence in Central Asia might produce a divergence with Russia, the United States and China….
